Matthew Carone
Born in Hoboken, New Jersey

Carone's interest in art began as a teenager during the summer of 1944 while his brother Nicolas Carone was studying with Hans Hoffman in Provincetown, MA., where they also lived in Hoffman's home. At Hoffman's request, Matthew modeled for the class in which Nicolas was a student. It was at this time that he felt the power and magnetism of Hoffman's teaching, listening closely and trying desperately to understand this new language through Nicolas, considered to be Hoffman's
best student. Through the years and through his brother's early introductions, Matthew has had a close association with many artists and critics, including Roberto Matta (who became the most profound influence in his life), Federica Matta, Conrad Marca-relli, James Brooks, Paul Jenkins, Rico Donati, Robert Beauchamp, Sandro Chia, Cornelis Zitman, Larry Rivers, Norman Bluhm, Balcolm Greene, Berrocal, James Rosenquist, Duane Hanson, Robert Rosenblum, Thomas Hoving, William Lieberman, Clement Greenberg and many more. But is was the intellect of Matta more than any other that inspired Carone. A dear friend for over forty-five years, Matta's uncanny vision and enthusiasm seduced Carone to pursue and discover his own image through the master's inspiring vision.
